Award winning equine photographers Tony Stromberg and Kimerlee Curyl invite you to join them for a 6-day equine photography workshop that will be taught at Return to Freedom in southern California, the highly acclaimed American Wild Horse Sanctuary that is home to over 200 rare and beautiful mustangs from all over the US. Return to Freedom is rare, in that the mustangs are segregated to help preserve their unique and rare bloodlines, but are also allowed to live their lives in their natural “family” communities, roaming free as they would in their natural habitat.

The workshop is June 2-7, when the landscape is full of color and richness, and life is celebrated with the arrival of new foals. Included in the workshop will be a “wild horse walking adventure”, this is devoted to teaching participants about wild horse behavior and how to move about and integrate into their special world. RTF Founder and renowned wild horse behaviorist, Neda DeMayo will offer in depth journeys into the herds as well as insight into herd societies, communication and how movement is perceived. The workshop will also teach the importance of developing a relationship with the horses, with emphasis in “co-creation” as it relates to the authorship of a finished image.

Additionally, Tony and Kimerlee will share a lifetime of experience and insights, the specific techniques and processes they have learned throughout their lives, and their unique philosophy about what goes into creating an image that is evocative, moving and captivating... an image that has depth and soul, and is not just “snapshot”.

“Spirit”, from the Dreamworks animation feature film “Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron” now claims the sanctuary as his permanent home, and we will be hosting a special “Capture the Spirit” contest during the workshop, with winners having their images represented by the Sanctuary in upcoming years. In addition, we will be compiling the best photos taken by all workshop participants that will be published and presented in a hard bound book to be used for promotion and fundraising for the Sanctuary and its horses, and possibly distributed through national bookstores.

There will be plenty of time to enjoy walking quietly through the hills, shooting, editing and sharing or our work and love of the horse.

We will include a continental style breakfast, organic lunches, and we will also enjoy a series of inspirational “horse movies’ in the evenings throughout the week. We will wrap up the week with a BBQ under the stars, with live music and a big-screen slideshow of what we have done during the week.

The sanctuary is located in Lompoc, CA just north of Santa Barbara County and outside the Santa Ynez Valley. Although we will have lots of shooting and activities planned for you throughout the week, there will be time to explore the surrounding Santa Ynez Valley, which is filled with many famous tasting rooms, art galleries and restaurants, as well as some well-known ranches and resorts. For more information on the valley and all it has to offer please visit the Santa Ynez Valley Visitors Association.

Photographers of all levels are welcome. Beginners please have a good understanding of your camera and how it works in manual modes.

Please note: A considerable percentage of the workshop fee will go to support the sanctuary and its educational programs, and to help Return to Freedom in establishing its long term goal... the creation of the country’s first Wild Horse Conservancy and Land Trust... a resting place where our beloved equine friends can live and grow in a respectful and protected environment... forever and free.
